We can thank Robert Owen for starting the ball rolling during the British Revolution when it comes to lifestyle balance. After all, he formulated the goal of having it all: productivity, fun, and downtime. He coined the slogan: 8 hours labor, 8 hours recreation, 8 hours rest.
Now, life since then has changed, with multiple demands and ever-evolving technology often keeping us from striking a balance. Often, we can get caught up in to-do lists, juggling far too many balls in the air, and one aspect of our life can dominate, leaving little room for enjoyment and recovery.
So here at SEASALT, we thought we’d take an opportunity to remind ourselves of the importance of work, rest, and play. We love the Florida lifestyle and we’re excited to share our lifestyle balancing tips with you.
Work
Mental and physical work – anything that keeps our minds and our bodies active – is essential for a fulfilling life. Having a purpose, following a passion, and using our skills is one of the pillars of life. When we think of work we automatically imagine the 9 to 5, yet work can take the shape of studying, volunteering, or completing our family obligations.
A word of warning, however: all work and no play make Jack a dull boy. Never allow your work to eclipse the other aspects of life.
Play
It’s not just the kids who need to play, grown-ups need fun too, you know! With all of the financial and family commitments that we juggle in the modern world, it’s necessary to make time to kick back and do what we truly enjoy. The coastal life is our playground. There’s nothing like sailing, watersports, or drinking a beer with your toes in the sand to make the most of living by the sea.
Rest
Getting enough rest allows us to work and play without running into burnout. This includes quality sleep, downtime, relaxation, and stress management. One of the incredible things about your home by the ocean is the healing and soothing properties of life by the water. Many people find that a walk on the beach or reading a book on the soft sand restores them in ways that other activities do not.
When we get enough rest, we are more alert, make better decisions, and are more productive – ultimately allowing us to enjoy life.
